Two boys focus on a tablet and a small robot during a classroom activity.Hobbs first and fourth graders recently teamed up to create mazes for spherical robots. Each first grader was paired with a fourth grader, and each team worked together to draw a challenging maze for the robots. The mazes included turns and dead-ends, and some included requirements such as spinning the robots. After testing out their own mazes, the teams rotated to try out other teams’ mazes. Students could control the robots in real time or code them to repeat specific actions.
Activities like this are a great way for students to practice planning ahead. Inter-grade partnerships help older students learn to simplify their learning in order to teach it, and they help younger students pick up tried-and-tested techniques from the older students.
