Social Studies Department Goals

The social studies department will enhance critical thinking, promote cultural competence, and foster civic engagement.

  1. Enhance Critical Thinking: Develop and implement curriculum strategies that actively promote critical thinking skills among K-12 students. This includes designing lessons and activities encouraging students to analyze and evaluate historical events, cultural phenomena, and societal structures, to help students develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of the world.

  2. Promote Cultural Competence: Create initiatives to enhance cultural competence within the social studies curriculum. This involves integrating diverse perspectives, histories, and global perspectives into lesson plans. The goal is to ensure that students gain a comprehensive understanding of different cultures, societies, and historical contexts, to ensure an inclusive and empathetic worldview.

  3. Foster Civic Engagement: Implement programs to engage students in civic education and participation. This includes organizing mock elections, community service projects, We the People, and interactive learning experiences to teach students about their roles and responsibilities as informed and active citizens. The aim is to instill a sense of civic duty, responsibility, and a lifelong commitment to democratic principles.
